The Division of Nutritional Sciences at Cornell University invites applications for a tenure-track position at the level of assistant professor.  The candidate is expected to have experience in public nutrition research in developing countries. Areas of expertise include, but are not limited to, epidemiology, medicine and/or the social and behavioral sciences.  The candidate is expected to establish and maintain a vibrant and independent research program, and to build academic linkages within DNS program areas, and with other departments and centers throughout the university.  The successful candidate will teach in the Division's graduate and undergraduate program, bring unique expertise and perspectives to the Cornell curriculum, and mentor graduate students within and outside the Division of Nutritional Sciences.  This position is part of major university-wide initiatives in Global Health, Social Sciences and the New Life Sciences. 
 
Responsibilities
The successful candidate is expected to demonstrate the capacity to initiate and maintain a vigorous, externally funded research program and to contribute to teaching epidemiology in the undergraduate and graduate programs. The distribution of professional effort will be approximately 60% research, 35% teaching, and 5% administrative service. Consistent with departmental objectives, the successful candidate is expected to train graduate students in graduate programs relevant to the candidate's expertise, forge professional relationships within the Division of Nutritional Sciences and other academic units on campus, and enhance research and training opportunities in areas broadly relevant to nutrition.
 
Qualifications
We are seeking highly motivated individuals with strong research and teaching credentials.  A doctoral degree (Ph.D., MD, and/or equivalent) is required.  Postgraduate training and/or experience is highly desirable.
 
Academic Rank and Compensation

Postdoc Associate - Tissue Responses to Amino Acid Deprivation

The Division of Nutritional Sciences is seeking a Postdoctoral Associate to conduct studies, using rats or mice and cell culture systems, on the tissue responses to amino acid deprivation.  Current focus is on the regulation of protein synthesis and stress responses.

The main responsibility is to conduct studies using animals and cultured cells.  Duties will include the development of research questions, the design and conduct of research to address these questions, analysis of the experimental data, writing and submitting research papers for publication, and some supervision of research technicians and graduate/undergraduate students working in the laboratory.

This is a one-year term position with possibility of renewal based on performance and availability of funding.

Candidates must have a Ph.D. with a strong foundation in metabolism.  Experience working on the regulation of protein synthesis helpful.

The Division of Nutritional Sciences (DNS) at Cornell University is seeking a Dietetic Internship (DI) Community Nutrition Coordinator.  This position, available in January of 2010, is a three–year, 30-40 hour/week, twelve-month appointment, that is renewable based on available funding and performance.

The DI Community Nutrition Coordinator will devote 75% of his or her effort (30 hours/week) as follows:

  • develop, maintain and sustain   relationships with 10-14 preceptors at community nutrition sites who are   willing and suitable to provide supervised practice for at least one dietetic intern for 3.5 months (for four days a week) and to engage in a mutually beneficial limited focus research project for a dietetic intern, under the supervision of the DI Community Nutrition Coordinator or another DNS faculty member.Community  nutrition sites are located in Ithaca and   nearby areas (Syracuse, Auburn, Cortland, Montour  Falls, etc.) and in Rochester.  This individual will also support  preceptor training and function as needed and plan and coordinate final   community nutrition research presentations and preceptor appreciation events.

  • Teach NS 6250 (Community Nutrition in Action: Theory to Practice) a 3-credit course providing reflective  learning and necessary oversight for the supervised practice of up to 10   interns from mid-August to mid December;

  • Prepare and maintain for required   accreditation files a fully-executed MOU with each community nutrition placement site; a learning plan for each intern detailing DI competencies,  planned learning experiences and proposed evaluation; a learning contract   between intern and preceptor detailing the key responsibilities of the   intern and preceptor; and evaluations by intern, preceptor and coordinator of intern's performance in the placement site.  All of these documents must be reviewed by the DI Director.The MOU must   also be reviewed and approved by the DNS Executive Director for  Administration and Finance.

  • Coordinate with the Dietetic Internship Director annual evaluations of placement sites, strategic and   management plans for community nutrition supervised practice,   accreditation reports, self-evaluations, and student learning outcomes  reporting relevant to the community nutrition supervised practice;

  • Coordinate with Dietetic Internship Director and Clinical/Management Coordinator effective   implementation of the supervised practice of the Cornell Dietetic  Internship in order to contribute to DNS and Cornell Cooperative Extension missions, and in compliance with accreditation standards.

  • Participate in informational  interviews with prospective applicants;

  • Participate in selection interviews and annual process for pre-select, regular selection and   post-match selection of interns;

  • Participate in internship graduation in June in Rochester;

  • Participate in internship advisory council meetings;

  • Write letters of reference for interns and alumni as requested;

  • Support the Didactic Program in Dietetics through advising of undergraduate students; and

  • Assist with other dietetics faculty in placing and providing oversight to undergraduate dietetics students in suitable  fall, spring or summer field experiences (NS 4030).

The remaining 25% effort (10 hours/week) can  be devoted to teaching, research, or outreach and extension, depending on academic credentials, and research and extension opportunities that exist or can be created.  The coordinator can:

  • Teach one additional course in support of either the undergraduate DPD program or the DI – this effort would be funded by the DNS; or

  • Independently secure external  research funding either as an principal investigator (if qualified for the title of Senior Research Associate) or by joining the research group of a  supporting DNS faculty member as a  Research Associate; or

  • Independently secure internal or external funding as a principal investigator (if qualified for the   title of Senior Extension Associate) or by joining the research group of a  supporting DNS faculty member as an Extension Associate.

This position reports to the Dietetic Internship Director and Dietetics Program Leader for all Community Nutrition Coordinator and course responsibilities.

Required Qualifications:  an R.D. with 5-7 years of relevant dietetics practice experience (including at least 3-5 years of experience and practice in community nutrition); and a PhD degree in a relevant field such as dietetics, nutrition, health promotion, public health, health administration or business administration.

Preferred Qualifications:  Relevant community nutrition research experience.
