Suggestions for 4-Year Schedule
NUTRITIONAL SCIENCES
College of Human Ecology

 Note:
 •Schedules vary according to individual interests and needs.
 •New students should  take 12-15 credits in first semester to adjust to demands of Cornell courses.

 •READ ALL DNS Advising Handouts  and CHE Student Guide.  ASK  if you have questions
 •It is the student’s responsibility to understand college and major requirements for graduation!!!

FALL -- FRESHMAN

(Must take 1 Human Ecology course)

•CHEM 206 or 207 (F only)
•BIOG 101/103, 105 or 109  (F only) 
•CHEM or BIOG support courses as needed
•NS 115 (F only)
•NS 116 (F only, recommended)
•First year writing seminar
•Other requirements if AP bio credit or bio postponed (HD 115/PSYCH 101, ECON 101, ECON 102, DEA 111, DSOC 101)(For dietetics will need PSYCH 101 or HD115)
•MATH 100 (F/S) if needed

 

 

SPRING -- FRESHMAN  By the end of the Spring semester, must complete a total of at least 5 CHE credits

(Must take 1 Human Ecology course)
•CHEM 208 (S only)
•BIOG 102/104,106 or 110 (S only) •CHEM or BIOG support courses as needed
•First year writing seminar
•NS 120 (S only) and/or NS122 (required for dietetics, S only)
•NS 247 (F/S, required for dietetics, or sophomore)
•HE course to meet social science requirement or as elective (HD 250, ECON 101/102, or other) or BTRY 115 for math requirement.
•Food Service Management - required for dietetics

FALL -- SOPHOMORE

(Must take 1 Human Ecology course)

•NS 245 (F only, recommended)
•NS 345 (F only.  Need biology and chemistry as prereq.
•CHEM 357 (F only, if  premed or biochem interest)
•CHEM 251 (org lab, F/S with 357 concurrently, or later)
•Requirements in social sciences, humanities, other HE (HD 115, ECON 101/102, other), math or statistics (For dietetics will need statistics)
•BIOMI 290 (F/S) (required for dietetics, or junior)
•PHYS 101/207 (F only, if premed or exercise science, or junior)
•EDUC 115 if needed
•Food Service Management (H ADM 106, F/S)- required for dietetics

 

 

SPRING -- SOPHOMORE  By the end of Spring semester, must complete a total of at least 12 CHE credits

(Must take 1 Human Ecology course)
•CHEM 358 (S only, if  have 357) or CHEM 257 (S only, if not 357-358)
•CHEM 251 (org lab, F/S, or later)
•NS 341 (S only, or junior yr, or may take BIOAP 311(F); need both for exercise science)
•Requirements in social sciences, humanities, math or statistics •Advanced nutrition electives (e.g., NS 347[alt yrs]), math
•Food Service Management - required for dietetics
•BIOBM 332 (S only) or BIOMI 290 (F/S), or later, if will take BIOBM 331)
•NS 120 (S only) if desired
•PHYS 102 or 208 (S only, if needed and have 101/207, or junior yr)

FALL -- JUNIOR

•NS 320(F only), BIOBM 331 (F only), or BIOBM 330 (F/S)
•BIOAP 311(F only, if not NS 341; need both if exercise science)
•Food Service Management (if dietetics transfer)
•BIOMI 290 (F/S, required for dietetics, or senior)
•Advanced nutrition electives (e.g., NS 306, 361, 451) 
•HE electives, other requirements, or electives (see above)
•Semester abroad or urban semester (if elected)


SPRING -- JUNIOR

•NS 331 (S only, or S senior, need NS 320 or BIOBM 330 or 331)
•NS 425, and 450 (all S only)  if dietetics
•BIOBM 332 or BIOMI 290,  if took BIOBM 331
•Advanced nutrition electives (NS 315[alt yrs],347[alt yrs], 421, 425, 450, 457, 475[alt yrs])
•HE electives, other requirements, or electives (see above)
•Semester abroad or urban semester (if elected)
•Food Service Management (if dietetics transfer)

FALL -- SENIOR

•NS 332 (F only, prefer NS 331 prior)
•NS 441/442 (F only) required for dietetics; need biochem, physiology, and NS 331 for NS 441)
•Remaining requirements (see above)
•Advanced nutrition electives (e.g., NS 431, previously listed courses or selected grad classes)
•Electives  to meet personal or career interests  (graduate courses with permission)

SPRING -- SENIOR

•NS 488 (S only, required for dietetics)
•Remaining requirements (see above)
