Overview of Course Requirements

Nutritional Sciences - CHE

College of Human Ecology

For Students Entering August 2007

See NS/HUMEC graduation requirements. It is the student's responsibilty to understand and to meet college and major graduation requirements.

1.  NATURAL SCIENCES
Introductory biology, 6-8 cr [BIOG 101-104, 105-106, or 109-110]
Introductory chemistry, 8 cr [CHEM 206-208, 207-208, or 215-216]
Organic chemistry lecture, 3-8 cr [CHEM 257 (not for pre-med), 357-358, or 359-360]
Organic chemistry lab, 2-4 cr [CHEM 251 or 301]
Physiology,3-4 cr [NS 341(4)] or [BIOAP 311(3)]
Biochemistry,4-6 cr [NS 320(4)], [BIOBM 330(4)], [BIOBM 331(3) + BIOBM 332(2)], or [BIOBM 331(3) + BIOMI 290(3)], or [BIOBM 333 (4)]
No additional credit for NS 320 if the above biochemistry courses are taken to fulfill biochemistry requirement, and vice versa.
For special career interests:

  • Premed:   CHEM 357-358 [6 cr] and Physics, PHYS 101-102 or 207-208 [8 cr]
  • Dietetics:  Microbiology, 3 cr, [BIOMI 290]  
  • Exercise science:  Both NS 341 [4 cr] and BIOAP 311 [3 cr].  Strongly recommend: Physics, 8 cr, [PHYS 101-102 or 207-208]

2.  NUTRITIONAL SCIENCES
Core courses, 16 cr:        

  • NS 115  Nutrition, Health and Society  [3]
  • NS 245  Social Science Perspectives on Food and Nutrition [3]
  • NS 331  Physiological and Biochemical Bases of Nutrition [4]  
  • NS 332  Methods in Nutritional Sciences [3]
  • NS 345  Nutritional and Physicochemical Aspects of Foods [3]
Advanced electives in Nutritional Sciences, 9 cr NS courses at 300 level or above.  May include only 3 cr of NS 400, 401, 402, 403 or 499.  May include NS 341 only if BIOAP 311 is taken to meet physiology requirement.  May not include NS320.
For dietetics: NS 247, 425, 441, 442, 450, 488 and Food Service Management (H ADM 106). 

3. SOCIAL SCIENCES One introductory course in 2 social sciences.
 Choose 1 course from any 2 areas (total 6 cr)
 Economics   [ECON 101* or ECON 102*]   Note: ECON 101 & 102 count as HUMEC courses
 Psychology  [HD 115* or PSYCH 101]   For dietetics: PSYCH 101 or HD115 is required
 Sociology     [HD 250* or DSOC 101]
       *HUMEC courses used for Social Science requirement may be counted toward the 9 cr of required
       HUMEC courses outside NS, but these HUMEC courses may not be counted toward the 40 required HUMEC credits.
       Advanced courses in the social sciences may be used if introductory courses are taken as part of 40 HUMEC credits.

4. WRITTEN COMMUNICATIONS and HUMANITIES
First Year Writing Seminars: 6 cr  (MUST BE COMPLETED DURING FIRST 2 SEMESTERS.)
Humanities: 3 cr.  Includes literature, history, philosophy, religion, and archaeology. Critical, historical, and theoretical studies of arts and design are included.  Does not include language, creative, or performing arts.

5.  QUANTITATIVE  & ANALYTICAL
Math:  BTRY 115 (4 cr), Math 100 or equivalent precalculus competency as demonstrated by assessment test, college credit for precalculus or higher level math, or AP score (3 or higher on AB test, or 2 or higher on BC test).
Statistics or advanced math: 3 -4 cr. Select from:
       Statistics: AEM 210[4], BTRY 301 [4], MATH 171 [4], SOC 301 [4], or PSYCH 350 [4], PAM 210 [4], ST SCI 210/ILRT 210 [4]
       Finite math or calculus: Math 105 [3], MATH 106[4], MATH 111[4], MATH 112 [4]
       For dietetics and exercise science: Statistics course is required.  For premed: Calculus course is required.    
        
6.  HUMAN ECOLOGY (HUMEC) outside NS
9 cr selected from HUMEC courses not in NS as per college requirements. Human Ecology courses used to meet Social Science requirement may count toward these 9 cr.  May not include HE 100, 101, 201, or any 403 course. Maximum 3 credits of 400, 401, 402 may be applied. 8 credits of Urban Semester may be applied. 7 credits of Capital Semester may be applied.

7.  OTHER   Elective courses to bring academic credits to 120.
Must include a total of 40 HUMEC credits not including HUMEC courses taken in Social Sciences.  If other major and college requirements are met, up to 12 credits of NS 400, 401, 402, 403 may be applied to 40 HE and 120 Cornell credits.
